Did you know that 8 out of 10 women in the UK currently wear the wrong size bra? Until a few weeks ago, I was one of them! Debenhams are on a mission to encourage women to use their free expert bra fitting service so that they can reap the benefits of a correctly fitting bra. Their Bra Fit Challenge launched this month and I had the pleasure of visiting the flagship store on Oxford Street, London, a few weeks ago for my complimentary bra fit service and to find out more about the campaign.
Debenhams sells over 10,000 bras per week and in the last three years their professionally trained bra fitters have seen an increase in the number of women wearing the wrong size bra. There is a bit of trickery involved in working out your bra size and many women now choose to use online guides to work out theirs, but over 70% of women using these guides end up wearing the wrong size. And wearing the wrong size bra can lead to tension headaches, saggy boobs, back pain and saggy boobs.
The bra fitting service at Debenhams was very quick and very straightforward, and no, you didn't have to go bra-less if you don't want to. I took my top off so the fitter could see how my current bra - a 30D balconette style bra - was fitting. Immediately she knew it was the wrong size because the straps were digging into my shoulders and the cups were simply not supportive enough!
The bra fitter then measured me and my bra size was calculated as 28E. However, based on my shape and the fact that I have had two children, she suggested that 30DD would fit more comfortably. She explained that having been through two pregnancies, the skin and breast tissue was now softer, and despite me feeling that I had gone down a cup size, the opposite was true. I had gone up a cup size, but my bra was quite literally letting me down.
The bra fitter brought me several bras to try: firstly to see if 30DD did actually fit, and then to see which styles I felt most comfortable in. She recommended that I go for a half cup style rather than balconette style, then she explained how to adjust the bra, and how it should fit around my bust. We had a good giggle as I jumped and jiggled about in my new bra, feeling amazed at how good it felt and the difference it made to how I looked!
Debenhams recommend being fitted every 6 months, because our size and shape can easily fluctuate for many reasons. So if, like me, it's been a while since you were last fitted for a bra, I can't recommend the complimentary bra fitting service at Debenhams enough.
