Now I’m on maternity leave I have a bit of extra time on my hands and whilst I seem to spend most of my time cleaning cupboards and rearranging tea bags (it’s the nesting instinct!) I am trying to set aside a little bit of “me time” each day.

Ciate Paint Pot Pom Pom China Glaze Techno 1

I decided to do my nails and thought I would try out my latest nail polish, Ciate Paint Pot in Pom Pom, which I got in my Selfridges Beauty Box. It’s a vibrant red with a slight orange tone to it. It applied like a dream and in just two coats my nails were perfectly covered. It’s such a fun, bright shade and makes me feel a little glam.

Ciate Paint Pot Pom Pom China Glaze Techno

The last time I had gel nails done, I had a little glitter applied to my ring fingernails and really liked it. So I decided to add some glitter to this nail look by applying China Glaze in Techno to my pinky fingernails. I love this glitter polish as it has tiny glitter particles as well as bigger hexagonal chunks and it looks fab when the light hits it. I applied two coats of this to each pinky nail.

Ciate Paint Pot Pom Pom China Glaze Techno 2

It’s been three days since I did my nails with this look and despite all my manic cleaning my nails have not chipped at all. This is the first Ciate polish I’ve actually ever bought, well, technically I didn’t even buy it as it was a “sorry!” from Selfridges, but anyway I’m impressed with it so will definitely be looking to try more of them.

Let me know if you have any favourite Ciate shades that you think I should try!

Last week I got my latest Hello Fresh delivery and I showed you the first of the three meals that I made. The box costs £39 and contains recipes and all the required ingredients to make three meals for two people: Fearless Sesame Crusted Salmon with Couscous and Cherry Tomato Salsa, The King’s Massaman Curry with Toasted Cashews and Sweet Potato, and Pork Chops with Leek and Potato Mash and Onion Gravy.

This week I’m showing you how I got on with the Pork Chops with Leek and Potato Mash and Onion Gravy.

Now I don’t normally cook with pork, I do occasionally order it when I’m eating out if there is a really yummy sounding pork belly dish on the menu, but generally speaking it’s my last choice. So I was amazed at how much I enjoyed this meal, it is my favourite Hello Fresh meal so far! I think the onion gravy absolutely makes this dish, I am actually craving some onion gravy and mash right now.Y-U-M!

If you’d like to try a box for yourself you can use my referral code to get yourself a massive £20 discount: C4MJSY. Just head over to www.hellofresh.co.uk to get started!

PS. I must say thanks to my lovely fiancé for taking the photo of the finished dish, I think he did a really good job!

Last month Selfridges released a one-off special limited edition beauty box to celebrate the launch of their new Beauty Workshop. The box cost £15 plus £4.95 shipping, yet contained over £100 worth of amazing products. Unsurprisingly it sold out before most of us had even woken up so a few hours later Selfridges released another batch for sale – woohoo!

I failed miserably at trying to order a box but my wonderful fiancé managed to order one for me - yay! Only to receive a phone call from Selfridges a couple of days later to say they had oversold the boxes – boo. But not to worry, they were going to put together an alternative box and refund the shipping charge – yay!

Selfridges limited edition beauty box

I finally got my Selfridges beauty box a week or so ago and I’m really happy. The box contains six of the seven products from the original box, one alternative product and one additional product to say sorry. So here’s what I got in my Selfridges Beauty Box:

Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask 5ml – Philip B Katira Hair Masque 60ml – Estelle & Thild Lipbalm 15ml – Antipodes Divine Face Oil 30ml – Stila One Step Correct 30ml – Bioeffect EGF Serum 5ml -Aesop Remove 15ml - Ciate Miniature Paint Pot

Selfridges limited edition beauty box contents

Yes, it was a little disappointing having to wait and I know a lot of people were annoyed with Selfridges for over-selling, but I think that they have handled it really well. They could have just said “sorry, no more boxes, here’s a refund.” Yet they spent the time to put together an alternative.

Also, refunding the shipping charge was a nice touch and yielded a further bonus for us. My fiancé chased up his refund as after a few weeks it still hadn’t been done, so to say sorry for the delay they sent him a £15 e-voucher instead. He spent it on a gorgeous little Jellycat owl for Bump.

I think you’ll agree that things worked out pretty nicely!

BING BONG! My September beauty box from Joliebox just arrived and I’m actually pretty happy with what I got this month, so thought I would share with you!

September Joliebox 1
September Joliebox 2
September Joliebox contents

My box this month features various shades of blue instead of the standard Joliebox black. I know last month they had a variety of different coloured boxes and they had different designs for the birthday boxes. I personally love this as I used my boxes for storage and it’s nice to change it up a bit. The products inside the box are contained in a little black drawstring bag that Joliebox have been using for a while now instead of the old shredded paper and tissue combo. These little bags are so handy; I use them for putting make-up or cosmetics when I’m going away (one like this is currently packed in my hospital bag!), I even use one as my kindle case! Versatile or what.

As usual you get a copy of Joliemag which is actually a good little read as well as the Menu card telling you about the products. There is also a leaflet from Boohoo with their picks for A/W 12 as well as a 10% discount code. Nice!

The products this month are fab, I am so pleased with everything I got. The products are themed around London Fashion Week and there are three full-sized products, one deluxe sample and two smaller samples which have been added as an “extra”. Here’s what I got:

Balmi Lip Balm – this is a full-sized product worth £4.99 and I got raspberry flavour. I’ve seen lots of people talk about these lip balms on Twitter and other blogs but I’m not one to go out and buy something just because it’s trendy. That said, I am always happy to try products that I know are being talked about! It contains SPF15, smells super fruity and feels pretty nice on my lips. It also has a little string so you can attach it to something else so you don’t lose it. Will it take place of my beloved Carmex though? That I am not sure of.

Redken Align 12 Protective Straightening Lotion – this is a 30ml deluxe sample sized product; the full-sized product has 150ml and on www.feelunique.com costs £12.90 so I guestimate that this sample is worth £2.58. It’s a best selling lotion which protects, straightens and shields medium hair. I almost always blow dry my hair so this product is ideal for me and perfectly suited to my hair type. It smells gorgeous too, I can’t wait to try it.

I Love… Coconut Face Mask – this is a full-sized 15ml product but no amount of googling will tell me how much it normally costs! I have found that it’s a brand sold in Superdrug and the other products are pretty inexpensive so I think this mask would cost no more than £1. If you know for sure, let me know! This is a moisturising and reviving face mask which says it’s suitable for all skin types but I have noticed that the second and third ingredients are alcohol so if you have sensitive skin it may not be good for you!
Twistband Hair Ties – the box contains two of these hair ties which, from what I can google, are from an American brand. It looks like these are worth roughly £1 each which is a pretty expensive hairband! They are meant to leave your hair bump and kink free. I often wear my hair up in a ponytail or a loose knot for day time so will certainly make use of the red one – the orange one, I think I’ll give to my step-daughter!

Dr Bragi Bio Marine Exfoliant – although these two little samples were added in as an “extra” they were the items I was most excited about! I have heard of Dr Bragi products before, they are used in my friend’s salon, but I have never actually tried them. This exfoliant smoothes, cleanses, brightens and renews tired skin. A full-sized 50ml tube will set you back £25, it looks like these sachets have 1-2ml of product so worth maybe £1. I’m really looking forward to trying this product and if I like it I might actually go and book myself a facial. The Menu card has a code for 20% discount and free P&P which is a nice touch.

So there you have it, my September beauty box from Joliebox. I think it contained a really good mix of products this month and all of them are going to get used so I’m really pleased. Let me know your thoughts. If you got this month’s box I’d love to know if you got a different variety of products!

On Tuesday I received my latest Hello Fresh delivery, which I get once per month. It includes recipes and all the ingredients required to make 3 yummy meals for 2 people and costs £39.

Hello Fresh complete box
This week’s box included the following meals: Fearless Sesame Crusted Salmon with Couscous and Cherry Tomato Salsa, The King’s Massaman Curry with Toasted Cashews and Sweet Potato, and Pork Chops with Leek and Potato Mash and Onion Gravy. Quite a variety this week! In this post I’m showing you the Fearless Sesame Crusted Salmon with Couscous and Cherry Tomato Salsa.
Fearless Sesame Crusted Salmon with Couscous and Cherry Tomato Salsa ingredients
One of the main ingredients for the salsa was fresh coriander which I absolutely hate and my fiancé isn’t particularly keen on, so we decided to leave it out. This meal was really good and really filling. The cherry tomato salsa (minus the coriander!) works so well with the salmon, though Ian and I both agree that it could do with a little something else added to give it a kick. Next time we make it we might try adding some soy sauce or maybe some wasabi when cooking the salmon!
Fearless Sesame Crusted Salmon with Couscous and Cherry Tomato Salsa
It’s quite a pretty looking meal, if I was having friends over for dinner I’d cook this as it’s light but filling, it looks great and tastes good!

The TONI & GUY Shine Gloss Serum is from the Classic style collection. It’s a lightweight serum created to control frizz and leave hair looking shiny. It’s a finishing product which is used on dry hair. I know some serums can be used on damp hair as well but the directions for use only mention using it on dry hair.
Toni & Guy Classic Shine Gloss Serum

Nine times out of ten I blow dry my long hair which inevitably results in a few flyaway strands or a bit of a frizzy halo, as I’m not very skilled at blow drying! So I do usually end up using a serum, oil or balm to calm my hair down. I used 2 pumps of this serum which I rubbed between my hands and then worked it through the lengths of my hair, starting underneath as I find this means I’m less likely to overload my hair with product. I smoothed it over the ends of my hair to give a little more control and finally, very lightly, ran my hands over the top of my hair just to rein in any cheeky flyaways.

This serum does a great job at providing frizz control and giving a little shine to my hair. It left my hair looking super healthy and totally frizz-free with that same gorgeous fresh scent that all the products in the range seem to have. All I then needed to do was to use a little hairspray to hold the finished look. I’m really pleased with this product as out of everything I’ve tried so far this has worked the best for my hair.

TONI & GUY Classic Shine Gloss Serum comes in a 30ml bottle and can be bought from Boots for £7.19 although I received this product as a sample. I noticed that the range is currently included in the Boots 3 for 2 offer so now is the time to try it!

In my last Hello Fresh box I received the fresh ingredients and recipe cards to make the following yummy meals for two: Pan-Fried Summertime Chicken with Pancetta and Fresh Peas, Teriyaki Chicken with Coco-Nutty Rice and Bok Choi, and Mozzarella Stuffed Beefburgers with Caprese Salad. The box costs £39.00 including delivery and you get everything you need all conveniently measured out.

The final meal I made from this box was the Teriyaki Chicken with Coco-Nutty Rice and Bok Choi. There is an ingredient missing from the photo I left out the cashew nuts - I’m allergic and Ian doesn’t like nuts. They didn’t go to waste though as my step-daughter merrily munched her way through them! This meal was so tasty, I can’t wait to make it again.

I’ve been using some TONI & GUY hair products that I received from TONI & GUY Hair Meet Wardrobe – a complete range of haircare and styling products to help you express your personal style. The Curl Defining Oil is from the Prep step of the range.

The oil helps to condition and smooth your curls and prevent frizz. It is used on damp hair either before blow drying or hair can be left to dry naturally. My hair is long and mostly straight but has random kinks and waves; my hair type is not actually the type that this product is aimed at but I thought I would give it a go and see how it could work for me.

TONI & GUY Prep Curl Defining Oil

I used two pumps of the Curl Defining Oil, combed it through my damp hair then blow dried. The oil has the same fab “professional salon” smell as the rest of the range and the texture is quite interesting, it feels more like a lightweight gel than an oil. I was a little worried that it would feel too heavy on my hair but I really had nothing to worry about.

Despite the fact that this is meant to be a product for curly hair types, this works really well on my hair in place of a blow dry balm. It has left my hair looking and feeling really smooth and conditioned with a great shine. My hair, when left to its own devices, can form loose curls at the end so I thought it might define those but it didn’t.

My hair was simply left looking sleek with a nice bounce. A little serum and hairspray was all I then needed to finish my look. Considering this products isn’t intended for my hair type I’m really impressed! Next time I might try leaving my hair to dry naturally and see what effect it has then.

TONI & GUY Prep Curl Defining Oil comes in a 150ml bottle and can be bought from Boots for £6.39, although I received this product as a sample.

For the last three weeks I have been trying out some Montagne Jeunesse face masques that I was sent from their wide range of natural beauty products which, used as a four-week regime throughout summer, would help keep my skin looking lovely and fresh.

The four masques I was sent to try are: Montagne Jeunesse Blemish Mud, Montagne Jeunesse Cooling Cucumber Peel Off Masque, Montagne Jeunesse Iced Crystal Masque and Montagne Jeunesse Very Berry.

Montagne Jeunesse Summer Skin

I started the regime with the deep-cleansing Montagne Jeunesse Blemish Mud face masque, the second week I used the refreshing Montagne Jeunesse Cooling Cucumber Peel Off Masque, last week I used the cooling Montagne Jeunesse Iced Crystal Masque and this week, the final week, I’m using the hydration boosting Montagne Jeunesse Very Berry face masque. Packed with the juice of blueberries and cranberries this masque is full of anti-oxidants to help clear troubled skin and prevent premature aging.

This masque is a slightly shimmery purple shade and smells fantastic, it smells like Vimto sweets, a really juicy, berry scent! I applied it to my cleansed skin then relaxed for about 15 minutes (still reading Skippy Dies, I’m really struggling with this book). It did make my skin tingle a little, it wasn’t unpleasant for me but I do think those with more sensitive skin might find it a little irritating.

Montagne Jeunesse Very Berry face Masque

As this masque doesn’t dry out it rinsed away really easily – don’t panic when your face cloth turns pink as it washes out! The tingling sensation stopped as soon as the masque was removed and my skin was left feeling cleansed and refreshed. Out of the four masques my favourites have been the Montagne Jeunesse Blemish Mud as it made my skin feel really deeply cleansed and the Montagne Jeunesse Iced Crystal as it delivered more noticeable results.

You can find this face masque nationwide in retailers such as ASDA, Superdrug, Tesco, New Look and Morrisons as well as on the Montagne Jeunesse website; the RRP is £1.09. The company also has great ethics as all of their products are vegetarian-approved, made from natural ingredients and paraben-free. “Montagne Jeunesse is proud of its uncompromising natural credentials and ethos for ‘Conservation of Energy, Protection of Animals and the Environment.’”

Have you tried any of these masques? Which one do you prefer?

Disclosure: I received this product for free to review, however all thoughts and opinion are my own.

I always love reading Empties posts, particularly Sandra’s as she seems to find such amazing products! So this month I decided to do one too, though I only decided halfway through August to do it so this isn’t a full month’s worth. I still seemed to have finished quite a few products in that time though!

DSC01550

Lush Vanilla Dee-Lite: This is the same bottle that I mentioned back in June – it has lasted ages! I was pretty gutted that it ran out but after using up the other body lotions below I found another bottle of it in my cupboard in a Lush gift set that my brother had got me for my birthday back in April – yay! Of course I will definitely be buying this again.

Wen Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner: I got this in the July (I think!) Joliebox beauty box. It’s quite an unusual product, I’ve never heard of a cleansing conditioner before and wasn’t sure if I was meant to use shampoo as well. In the end I used shampoo as well and just applied this like a normal conditioner instead of following the weird instructions. I liked how it made my scalp feel tingly and it did leave my hair feeling well conditioned but I doubt I’ll buy it again.

Phyto Phytovolume Volumizing Shampoo: I’ve blogged about this shampoo before over here, I absolutely love it now I’ve got the knack of not spilling it everywhere (my tip is to pour the shampoo into the lid then pour that on your head). I’ll be buying this again!

Impulse Into Glamour: I haven’t really used body sprays since I was a teenager but recently I have been using them again. They just make me feel fresher on these hot days. I don’t really love this fragrance though, it’s a bit heavy and musky. I won’t buy this again but will buy other fragrances.

Korres Quince Body Butter: I got this ages ago in a Boudoir Prive beauty box and it sat in my cupboard waiting to be used, there were just other products I was drawn to using first. I eventually gave it a go when I was suffering with really dry skin during my second trimester of pregnancy but it didn’t help. I finally used it up after running out of Lush Vanilla Dee-Lite, it’s a rich butter and easily absorbed but I think there are other products that are better. Like Lush Vanilla Dee-Lite!

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Oil: When you’re pregnant you get all these different packs come through the post full of samples for mum-to-be and baby; one of the samples I got was a little sachet of this oil. It’s actually really nice, it absorbs really well and smells lovely. I’ve recently started using Clarins Tonic Body Treatment Oil so that is going to last me a while, but if it runs out within the next 8 weeks (when baby is due!) I will definitely pick up a bottle of the Skin Therapy Oil as from looking at the ingredients list it’s not full of cheap mineral oils.

Lancome Genefique Yeux: This little 5ml tub came in the Selfridges Advent Calendar. It’s a lovely gel-cream that sinks in really quickly. This tub has lasted months, you only need a tiny dab per eye. I would like to buy this again but now I’m on maternity leave I don’t have as much free cash so I’ll probably end up buying a cheaper alternative. Which is a shame because I really like it.

Boots Time Delay Wrinkle Prevention Day Moisturiser: Before you start saying to yourself “pfft I don’t need to use anti-wrinkle creams, I have no wrinkles”, just remind yourself of the key words here: anti-wrinkle, prevention. There’s no point using a preventative product once you’ve got lines and wrinkles. I learnt at college that the body starts to age at around 25 so I’ve been using anti-aging day creams since I was in my early twenties. I’m now 30 but no one ever believes me. Anyway, back to this moisturiser. I don’t often buy moisturiser anymore as I often get them in beauty boxes, on the rare occasion that I run out I just pop into Boots and grab whatever is on offer. This absorbs well and leaves my skin feeling smooth and moisturised, I’d buy it again.

Tropic Skin Revive Firming Nourishing Cream: This is another product that I received in a Joliebox beauty box, I think this came in April’s one. I hated this! It felt so nice on my skin but the smell is so strong and overpowering it made me feel sick! I won’t be buying it!

Lush Charity Pot Hand & Body Lotion: I bought this for £1 at the till in a Lush store. It’s okay, it makes your skin feel soft and the little tin is handy to put in your handbag but I don’t love it. I wouldn’t buy this as I’d be too busy buying Vanilla Dee-Lite!

Essential Care Organic Rose Moisturiser: Another Joliebox beauty box product, I think this came in the May box. See, I told you I rarely have to buy face creams! I really didn’t like this product. It says it’s for all skin types but on my combination skin it just wasn’t moisturising enough. I had to apply it, let it absorb and then apply again because my skin just felt so taut. I won’t buy this.

Caudalie Nourishing Body Lotion: I got this in a Feel Unique beauty box which shows you how long it’s been waiting to be used! It’s really good, it has a great scent and is really rich but absorbs super quick. I would buy this again.

Balance Me Cleanse and Smooth Face Balm: I got this in a Joliebox beauty box (April?) and adore it, this product actually made me look forward to cleansing my face at night! I blogged about it here. I love it, I’ll be buying it again!

So there you go, my August Empties! Have you used any of these products and would you buy them again?

So there you go, my August Empties! Have you used any of these products and would you buy them again?

In my last Hello Fresh box I received the fresh ingredients and recipe cards to make the following yummy meals for two: Pan-Fried Summertime Chicken with Pancetta and Fresh Peas, Teriyaki Chicken with Coco-Nutty Rice and Bok Choi, and Mozzarella Stuffed Beefburgers with Caprese Salad. The box costs £39.00 including delivery and you get everything you need all conveniently measured out.

This is how I got on making the Pan-Fried Summertime Chicken with Pancetta and Fresh Peas. It doesn’t quite look like the picture on the recipe card, but it tastes really good! The sauce was so creamy and full of flavour. We’ll definitely be making this recipe again.

On Saturday 1st September there was an open day at Vanity Beauty Academy, a beauty salon and training academy in my hometown of Hitchin. It’s owned by my lovely friend Jo and the open day was to celebrate Vanity’s first birthday!

Of course I popped by and got my nails done; I had gel overlays using Artistic Colour Gloss which costs £25. I chose a gorgeous coral shade and had gold glitter applied to the ring fingers. I think it works really well, even if the sun isn’t shining at least my nails are summery!

My little step-daughter even got her nails done too – just normal polish not gels as she’s only 3! She chose a bright pinky-red and had silver glitter over the top. She was so pleased, bless her!

I’ve been using some TONI & GUY hair products that I received as part of a word of mouth Bzz campaign featuring TONI & GUY Hair Meet Wardrobe – a complete range of haircare and styling products to help you express your personal style. The Heat Protection Mist is the product I have been using the most.

The mist helps to protect your hair from damage caused by heat styling and also helps to condition your hair for a smoother finish. You can use it on damp hair before blow drying and also on dry hair before using heated styling tools like straighteners or curling wands. My hair is long and mostly straight but has random kinks and waves so I do sometimes use my straighteners if my hair is going a bit squiffy.

TONI & GUY Prep Heat Protection Mist

Before you can use the TONI & GUY Prep Heat Protection Mist, you'll need to know how to unlock it. It flummoxed me at first and seemingly I'm not the only one! Just below the trigger spray, there is a little button. It's not obvious at first, but once you find it you'll be like "ahhhhhh!" Simply press the button to slide it across and, voila, it will unlock the spray.

I’ve been using the Heat Protection Mist on my damp hair before blow drying. When I had shorter hair I used to be quite naughty and not bother using any type of heat protection on my hair! My hairdresser used to go mad at me, but now my hair is longer and consequently drier I can’t get away with laziness anymore. If I don’t use heat protection my hair really suffers! I sprayed the mist all over my damp hair, about 8-10 sprays, combed through and then simply blow dried as normal. It really does help to leave your hair feeling smooth and sleek.

Sometimes the kinks and waves in my hair can be a little out of control, or if I’m going out for the evening I quite like a straighter finish, so I have also tried this mist on dry hair before using straighteners. I used one spray per section of hair then use the straighteners. I normally swear by Sebastian Shine Define Hairspray when I use heated styling tools; I’ve used it for years and quite frankly no other product comes close. I was quite happy with the results of the Heat Protection Mist though, it makes fast work of straightening my hair and my hair did feel protected. It doesn’t give quite as shiny a finish as the Sebastian spray and doesn’t seem to give hair any hold like the Sebastian spray does so you will need to use a separate hairspray.

TONI & GUY Prep Heat Protection Mist comes in a 150ml bottle and can be bought from Boots for £6.99, although I received this product as a sample through the Bzz campaign. I personally prefer my Sebastian Shine Define Hairspray but I would happily use this mist if I had run out or if I couldn’t get hold of Sebastian Shine Define Hairspray anymore. It’s excellent value for money considering that brands like Sebastian are about three times as much!

For the last few weeks I have been trying out some Montagne Jeunesse face masques that I was sent from their wide range of natural beauty products which, used as a four-week regime throughout summer, would help keep my skin looking lovely and fresh.

I started the regime with the deep-cleansing Montagne Jeunesse Blemish Mud face masque, the second week I used the refreshing Montagne Jeunesse Cooling Cucumber Peel Off Masque, this week I’m using the cooling Montagne Jeunesse Iced Crystal Masque. This is an exfoliating masque with Spearmint to cleanse and tone the skin, Dead Sea Salt to remove impurities and Sweet Almond and Jojoba oil to hydrate the skin.

This is a pale blue gel masque with tiny Dead Sea Salt crystals. It smells subtly of refreshing spearmint and feels super gentle on my skin. I cleansed my face as normal then massaged the masque into my skin so the Dead Sea Salt crystals could gently exfoliate, before relaxing for 15 minutes (or however long it took to read a couple of chapters of ‘Skippy Dies’).

Montagne Jeunesse Ice Crystal Masque

The masque rinses away easily as it stays in its gel form, it doesn’t dry out like clay masques or set like peel-off masques. I expected that my skin might feel cool afterwards, like it did when I used the Cooling Cucumber Peel Off Masque, but it didn’t. My skin did feel very refreshed, clean and soothed though and when my fiancé got home from work later that day he complimented my make-up – but my make-up was the same as it is everyday! I’m assuming that it must be this masque that has given my skin a bit more of a glow :)

You can find this face masque nationwide in retailers such as ASDA, Superdrug, Tesco, New Look and Morrisons as well as on the Montagne Jeunesse website; the RRP is £1.09 which is such a steal. The company also has great ethics as all of their products are vegetarian-approved, made from natural ingredients and paraben-free. “Montagne Jeunesse is proud of its uncompromising natural credentials and ethos for ‘Conservation of Energy, Protection of Animals and the Environment.’”

The final masque in the summer skin regime is Montagne Jeunesse Very Berry which I’m looking forward to using next week. In the meantime, let me know if you’ve tried any of these masques.
