One of the most exciting purchases I made during my first pregnancy was my pushchair. My friend and I were pregnant at the same time and so we went shopping together, and actually both chose the same pushchair! It served me well for the best part of three years, seeing me through two babies. There comes a point when a lightweight stroller is more convenient than a heavier pushchair and I was delighted to be offered the chance to try one of Summer Infant's new lightweight strollers: the UME One.
Summer Infant have recently introduced two new lightweight and convenient strollers to the UK: the UME One and the UME Lite. These strollers are already proving popular in the US where they have had great reviews and received awards! I decided to try out the Summer Infant UME One stroller and picked the gorgeous teal Boho Patchwork print, perfect for my one-year old.
Quick Look
The UME One is an affordable lightweight stroller and it weighs just 6.5kg. It boasts a large canopy hood which has extra zip-out panels, a multi-position seat recline which you can do with one hand, a padded five-point harness, and a one-handed compact fold.
It also comes with extra features like a rain cover, a cup holder, adjustable footrest, a decent-sized shopping basket and a colour-coordinated carry strap. The hood has a storage pocket and a small window that you can peep through to check on your child whilst pushing.
The stroller is suitable from birth until 15kg, which means that my three-year old is just about still able to go in it, if he wanted. And at just £129 it's fairly purse-friendly!
Tell Me More
The Summer Infant UME One stroller arrived with minimal assemble needed. The front wheels, hood and cup holder all clicked into place easily and then we were ready to go. To unfold the stroller, there is a small clip on the side to release the frame and allow it to be pulled open.
I needed to use two hands to unfold it completely, but folding back down is easy with one hand thanks to the small lever near the handles. Simply lift the lever and push the stroller down so it collapses into itself in a long, thin shape. The stroller fits nicely into the boot of my car (which yes, does need a good clean!) leaving plenty of room for shopping. Speaking of shopping, the basket beneath the stroller is a good size and I can fit plenty in it.
I've always been put off from buying a lightweight stroller as they've never looked or felt as sturdy as my pushchair. And while the Summer Infant UME One isn't as sturdy as my pushchair, it is really solid for such a lightweight stroller. Its small, hard wheels have handled concrete paths and grassy areas with ease. Going over uneven ground is a bit of a bumpy ride for J so I try to avoid them or go slow if he has fallen asleep! When we come to a stop the brake is easy to activate using the foot pedal on either side.
The seat of the UME One stroller has wide ridges that are slightly padded to provide a comfortable ride. The footrest is easily adjustable by simply lifting it up and then pressing on each side and pushing it back down. The seat can be fully reclined and raised with one hand, which is handy if J has decided that it's naptime.
My boys are both toddlers now but if I had a new baby I would use this stroller from about 6 months on. Although the seat does fully recline, the stroller is world-facing and the seat is not as comfortable as a carrycot or a seat unit on a pushchair. For a young baby I would prefer to have them parent-facing and in something that cocoons them.
The raincover is brilliant as it simply hooks over the stroller. The last thing you want is to be struggling to fit the cover when it is pouring down, something that happened to me when I first got my original pushchair! The hood is another fantastic feature as it extends right down providing plenty of cover and shelter. Perfect for a sleeping tot, and it will also be great for providing shade during the summer months.
The Summer Infant UME One stroller is a great all round stroller, perfect when you need something lightweight and convenient to use. It will be ideal for taking on holiday with us later this year. The extra features like the cup holder and the large hood have been well thought out, and it's a gorgeous design with the gunmetal grey frame and the touches of teal on the fabric.
