Pregnancy Diary: Second Trimester - 14 Weeks

 7th October 2016

At 14 weeks pregnant my little Pip is the size of a beetroot - one of my absolute favourite things to eat! - and is about three and a half inches long. I'm now in the second trimester of pregnancy, hurrah! I am hoping that means I will start to feel better soon. Here's what's been going on during my fourteenth week of pregnancy with baby number three.

Baby Development

Pip is slowly getting taller, however he is putting weight on very quickly now, having doubled in weight since last week. He is still so small though, so it's hard to believe he can do so much in there already! He can suck his thumb, make facial expressions like squinting and frowning, and will be moving around a lot! I can feel quite a lot movements already, as I mentioned in my last pregnancy update. They are not particularly regular and I only notice when I am sitting or lying very still, but there is no mistaking that this is him prodding me! A big part of his development this week is the start of his immune system and he is producing white blood cells to help him be able to fight infections once he is born.

Body Changes

My skin is starting to get much clearer now, which is nice as before I was pregnant I was actually using a skin tonic from the doctor to keep my adult acne at bay. It's lovely to start to have a bit of a glow now and is doing wonders for my confidence. I'm still managing to get away with wearing my regular clothes which is something short of a miracle when you look at the size of me! It won't be long before I need a full maternity wardrobe, which will be totally new to me as I've never been pregnant through winter before! Do let me know what your favourite maternity fashion pieces are!

Pregnancy Symptoms

With my first baby the morning sickness went around 14 weeks, which was good timing as I had gone on an amazing holiday to Barbados at the time! With my second baby the morning sickness had lingered until 16 weeks, and I also had a lot of headaches. This time, I've got to 14 weeks and I still have morning sickness and I have headaches as well! I don't know why they call it morning sickness as it's there all day long and if anything mine is worse in the evenings. I can't face eating very much, all I can really manage at the moment is kebab shop chips smothered in chilli sauce and vegan mayo!

Antenatal Appointments

I haven't had any appointments since my dating scan which I talked about in my last update, but I have booked in to see my community midwife at 16 weeks. I'll actually be 16 weeks and 5 days, as the antenatal clinics are once a week so I wouldn't be far enough along if I book it for the week before. Hopefully I will get to hear the baby's heartbeat!

At the dating scan I had bloods taken as part of the screening for Down's, Edwards' and Patau's Syndromes and I bruised really badly afterwards! I never usually bruise, but look at this whopper, a whole week later! It hurts to move my arm too far up or backwards and I can't lift anything with it either, even reaching up to flick a lights switch is a problem!

Looking Ahead

I've been tentatively starting to think about prams and cots; I really need to have a good declutter of the bedrooms and the boys' old things before I think about buying anything, but I'm looking at co-sleeper cribs so if you have any opinions, if you've tried any of them, please let me know!
