When the weather is as gloomy and damp as it has been lately, we end up spending a lot of time at home. With Noah at nursery school and us stuck indoors, it's a good chance for me to spend a bit more quality time with Jude. He's really taken a shine to learning about colours and numbers lately, which is quite clever for a two year old I think, so I really want to encourage this. I've always been keen on learning through play, as I'm not someone who has the patience to sit teaching my children with flashcards and I don't think it's fun for them anyway, so Orchard Toys are games that we really enjoy.
We've mentioned Orchard Toys a few times on the blog as we've had some of their games to review before. The latest one that we have been sent is called Smelly Wellies (£7.50), and it is a matching game created for children aged 2-6 years old. It's a game that can be played with two to four players, so it's ideal for the boys to play together or with me as well.
The game is really quite simple. There are four monster boards, which are also little three-piece jigsaws so gets the children's brains working before they start playing. There are also 24 welly cards in all different patterns and colours. Half of the welly cards are green on the reverse while the other half are red. Each player chooses their monster board and then chooses three red welly cards.
The three red welly cards are turned over and placed on the monster board pattern side up. The remaining red welly cards are removed from the game leaving just the green welly cards, and each player takes turns to choose a green welly card in the hope of finding a matching one for their monsters!
It's a fun game and has the option of being made a little more complex as children get to grips with it and want to challenge their memory skills a little more. Jude really loves trying to find his matching wellies and enjoys telling me the colours as he spots them. His favourite wellies are the banana pair! I'm trying to build a little stash of puzzles, games, books and films to help keep the boys entertained when the new baby arrives, and I am sure this is going to be a favourite!
