Pregnancy Diary: Third Trimester - 38 Weeks

24th March 2017

At 38 weeks pregnant my little Pip is about the size of a pumpkin. She (yes, it's a girl!) is over 19.5 inches long and could weigh around 7lbs now. Here's what's been going on during my 38th week of pregnancy with baby number three.

Baby Development

Pip's hair and eyes have developed their colour, though that could change once she is born. My boys were both born with dark blue eyes and their eyes are now light blue, and they both had a sprinkle of dark hair but now are both blonde. Her lungs are making more surfactant which is what will help her lungs inflate once she is born and all of her organs are functioning now.

Body Changes

I weighed myself this week and now weigh 142.1lb which is quite a big difference to my 12 week weight of 111.8lb! That's over 2 stone I have gained now, oh my gosh! And I had said that I was going to be more careful this pregnancy because of our wedding in July. Oops!

Pregnancy Symptoms

I am suffering with insomnia really badly at the moment. Which has its positives: I have made progress with a blanket I am crocheting for the baby and I am up to date with all the TV programmes I recorded! But it means by late afternoon I hit a wall and feel shattered, but with the boys to look after, a house to clean, dinner to cook, it's not ideal. I am just so restless and uncomfortable in bed and have the weirdest dreams whenever I do actually manage to sleep. Maybe it is my body's way of bracing me for the sleepless nights that are imminent.

Antenatal Appointments

The midwife has been round to do the home birth booking and it is all feeling very, very real now. I also saw the consultant which was meant to be for booking my C-section for if I go overdue, but he decided not to book it that day and instead said to come back in two weeks. He checked on the baby while I was there. Her head is engaged with only 2/5 palpable (which means he could only feel 2/5), her heartbeat was strong and steady and she is still in the correct position for birth.

Looking Ahead

I have a list of things we need to get and have ready for the home birth, such as duvets and blankets to make a nest for birthing on, with some waterproof sheeting underneath as we have carpets in our living room, so I will be sorting that out as soon as possible. I am going to be packing my hospital bags as well because the baby could arrive any day now. I'm just going to have everything in the bags for labour, so that whether it is a home birth or I transfer in, everything is in one place.

  1. I put on near enough 2 stone with Jaxon and he was a first baby. 10lbs of that was baby and when I re-weighed in (at my SW group) I had lost 20lbs - between baby and extra weigh. Don't stress about it :) remember you're cooking a baby in there!
